Key dates and main Carnival events

These are the most important dates of the International Carnival of Puerto de la Cruz 2026 and what you can experience on each of them:

  • 1 February – Carnival Opening: The official start of the carnival marks the moment when the city begins to fill with rhythm, colour and a festive atmosphere. From this day onwards, comparsas, masqueraders and groups appear on the streets, warming up for the most important celebrations of the following weeks.
  • 6 February – King’s Gala: One of the most eagerly awaited galas, where candidates present their creations in a show full of music, light and creativity. This event stands out for its staging and the visual impact of the costumes, designed to amaze the audience.
  • 12 February – Adult Queen’s Gala: One of the central events of the carnival. The candidates compete for the title of Queen with designs that combine art, fashion and spectacular production. This event usually attracts thousands of attendees and is widely broadcast by local and regional media.
  • 14 February – Carnival on the Street: Coinciding this year with Valentine’s Day, the city transforms into a huge open-air stage. Comparsas, batucadas, live music, costumes and a carefree atmosphere fill squares, streets and avenues. It is one of the most participatory days, perfect for those who want to experience the carnival in a spontaneous and close way.
  • 16 February – Entrecalles: A very popular day in which different groups and masqueraders roam the streets of the town centre, creating spontaneous encounters full of humour, dance and music. It is a day designed to enjoy the most authentic and friendly spirit of the carnival.
  • 18 February – Burial of the Sardine: One of the most symbolic and traditional events. The sardine, previously displayed to the public, begins its procession accompanied by the “widows”, satirical characters who mourn its farewell with humorous drama. The procession ends at the fishing pier, where the sardine is burned amid applause and fireworks.
  • 20 February – Mascarita Ponte Tacón: One of the most iconic events of the Puerto de la Cruz carnival. In this men’s race, participants run through the cobbled streets wearing high heels of at least 8 centimetres, overcoming obstacles and provoking laughter from the crowd. The originality of the costumes and the festive atmosphere make it one of the most popular events.
  • 21 February – Grand Apotheosis Parade: The great closing parade of the carnival. Decorated floats, comparsas, murgas, international groups and hundreds of masqueraders parade through the streets in a visual spectacle celebrating diversity and creativity.
